The Truth thread
Posted by HowardHolmes on February 09, 2010,03:19 in the Philosophy forum
It's not a matter of "should." We DO seek truth. Truth is the object of belief, and we all have beliefs. We all desire to be correct in our beliefs. We all believe our beliefs are correct.
We have already "gone" someone. We already believe that our beliefs are based on sufficient...

The Truth thread
Posted by HowardHolmes on February 09, 2010,03:12 in the Philosophy forum
I might have misspoke. I certainly believe our lives are impacted by reality (truth). I was trying to say that to make a claim about our ability to access truth is a waste of time. It goes without saying that be believe that our beliefs are true. To describe our beliefs in any way which goes beyond...

Confucianism
Posted by Tractatus on February 09, 2010,02:26 in the Society forum
Confucius' writings, to me, are very didactic and dated (i.e. The Analects) and assert sets of 'laws' which seem very fixed. Much in the same way as Plato did with his Republic (also very dated). Both writers discuss issues pertaining to societies of the time, and, in most instances, their philosophies...

From Monotheism to Polytheism

Buddhism comes in a great many varieties. Some of them are polytheistic and some of them are doesn't have any gods. Some places it is more or less the only religion (Tibet) while in other places is just one among many worshipped religions (as is typical of eastern religions).

From Monotheism to Polytheism

I think Buddhism might be more of a special case, since it comes from a polytheistic base but spread out into a large variety of cultures, somehow managing to merge with the local religion instead of supplanting it. So if you worshiped grandpa or a tree before, you still do, but now you're also a Buddhist....

Actually, if you include eastern religions, the drift also sometimes shifts into atheism (and away again). Thus, Buddhism in some variants are more or less atheistic while other variants are plainly polytheistic. Buddhism arose from polytheistic Hinduism and in some places drifted back again.

Cultures drift towards and away from monotheism. The Jewish monotheistic God apparently had polytheistic origins, by way of henotheism. And as you point out, Christian trinitarianism is a step away from monotheism, as any Muslim will affirm. Add in "monotheistic" patron saints taking over...

Ah, well, that's something else entirely. If I was in a country that didn't let me speak freely, then shutting up wouldn't be much of an answer, and even if leaving were an option, it wouldn't fix things.
In short, given that interpretation, I freely concede the point.

I was speculating on why you might think this was worth bringing up. As an atheist, I don't find it remarkable that other people came up with similar moral messages. It's a consequence of the fact that jesus didn't have any special divine insight.

After sorting out the negatives, I gather than you're claiming atheism is childish. As it does not appear to be so, I would ask that you offer some basis on which we should accept your claim.

I think it is rather good indicator of the absurdity of the creationist project that they have to tamper with more or less every discipline of science. Not just the hard sciences that directly contradict their mythology but also softer fields such as history.
